How I learned to speak up for myself!
Myra (16) was not too sure how to tell her best friend that some of the things that she did were affecting her and not in a good way. But amidst the uncertainty, a newfound source of support emerged in the form of Shaurya. As Myra’s life took a positive turn, she found the courage to open up and share a revealing glimpse of her inner world by entrusting a page of her diary to TeenBook.
Dear Diary,
OMG, today was unexpectedly amazing! Let me tell you all about it. So, you know how being a teenager can be challenging, right? Especially with my mom being super sus and overprotective. It’s like she doesn’t trust me at all! She won’t let me talk to other people freely or go out with my friends. It’s so annoying bro!
But guess what? Something crazy happened today! I met this amazing guy named Shaurya. It was totally random like mind-blown emoji for real! We bumped into each other at our extra classes, and he was so cool and friendly. But it wasn’t just about his looks; there was something about him that made me feel so comfortable talking to him.
Shaurya has this calming vibe that instantly puts you at ease. As we got to know each other better, it felt like we had known each other for years. It was such a relief to have someone like that to talk to.
Especially after my friend, Naina. Don’t get me wrong, I care about her, but she’s been trauma-dumping all her love life on me. Like, just the other day, she had this huge dramatic fight with her boyfriend, and she kept texting me about it all night. It was impossible to get any sleep!
I was torn between wanting to be there for her and not letting her stress affect my life so much. I didn’t want to hurt her feelings by telling her I needed a break from all the drama, but it was getting too much to handle.
You know, Diary, the best part about Shaurya was that he listened to everything I had to say without judging or giving unwanted advice. He was genuinely interested in me and my feelings. It felt like I could trust him with anything, and It’s like, seriously rare to come across that kinda friend these days.
Shaurya opened my eyes to the idea that things might still be better, even when I couldn’t see it myself. He shared some stories from his own life, and it was comforting to know that others have been through tough times too.
Shaurya suggested that I should stand up for myself and express how I feel, especially when things get toxic (aka Naina). It sounded scary at first, but I knew it was for my own good. He pushed me to be open and honest, even if it meant feeling awkward sometimes.
Finally, one day at school, I gathered the guts to talk to Naina about how her actions were messing with my own mental health. It wasn’t easy; my heart was pounding, and I was afraid of how she would react. But I knew I had to do it for myself.
I found Naina during lunch break, and we sat down in a quiet corner. I took a deep breath and spilled my guts right there. I was calm and told her that while I cared about her, I felt overwhelmed by all the stress she was sharing with me. I explained how it was impacting my sleep and overall well-being.
At first, she seemed surprised and a bit defensive. Guess she didn’t realize how much her actions were getting to me. But after a while, she started to understand where I was coming from. She apologized for not being considerate and promised to be more mindful in the future.
Shaurya was my rock through all of this. He urged me to be myself. Honestly, having him as a friend made all the difference.
Over time, I changed for the better. I started saying no when needed and made sure to communicate my needs and boundaries too.
And Naina and I are as tight as ever, especially after our conversation. She understood my need for some space and was more thoughtful about sharing her problems with me. Our friendship became healthier, and we started supporting each other in a more balanced way. We would only talk at specific times and had shorter conversations.
Life was getting better. Thanks to Shaurya’s advice and friendship, I learned to trust my instincts and stand up for myself when needed. We have started hanging out a lot more and really enjoy each other’s company.
That’s it for now. I’ll keep you updated on how things go.
Love,
Mayra XOXO
