What does a day of staying strong look like?
Vinayana shares with TeenBook what a regular day looks like when you’re just trying to stay strong. It’s honest, a little messy and might just feel like your own story.
Every day throws something new at me – some days are smooth, others… not so much. Living with a disability in a world that doesn’t always think about accessibility isn’t exactly a walk in the park. But over time, I’ve figured out how to stay strong, be kind to myself, and keep doing things I care about – whether that’s being creative, speaking up, or just reminding myself that I matter. Sooo, wanna know what a regular day looks like for me
Starting the day with gratitude
The morning sunlight streams through my window, warming my skin. I take a deep breath and remind myself to start the day with gratitude. Some mornings are harder than others – my body feels heavy, my mind races with unfinished tasks, and self-doubt creeps in. But I have learned to be kind to myself. Instead of pushing through with frustration, I acknowledge my emotions and gently ease into the day.
One of my first rituals is writing down a few things I am grateful for. It could be as simple as having supportive loved ones, being able to create, or the opportunity to use my voice for change. This small practice helps me shift my mindset and focus on the positive, even on difficult days.
The power of writing
Writing is more than just a profession or hobby for me – it is my sanctuary. Whether it’s poetry, a blog post, or a few lines in my journal, putting my thoughts into words grounds me. It allows me to process emotions, channel my frustrations into art, and find meaning in my experiences.
Today, I am working on a comic strip about disability representation. Through my comics, I challenge societal narratives, break stereotypes, and bring humor into conversations about accessibility and inclusion. Writing and storytelling are my tools for advocacy, and they give me a sense of control in a world that often tries to silence disabled voices.
Building a community online
By mid-morning, I take a break and scroll through Instagram. Social media can be overwhelming at times, but it also serves as a powerful space for connection and solidarity. My feed is filled with posts from fellow disabled creators and advocates, sharing their experiences, victories, and struggles.
A fellow writer shares a post about self-acceptance, and it resonates deeply. Engaging with others who understand my journey reminds me that I am not alone. We uplift one another, celebrate our achievements, and create a virtual space where disability is seen, heard, and valued.
Navigating work and creativity
The afternoon is dedicated to work. As a writer, poet, and disability advocate, my work involves multiple roles—responding to collaboration requests, preparing for an upcoming interview, and creating new reels for Instagram. Each task requires energy and mental focus, and some days, I feel the weight of having to constantly prove my worth in an inaccessible world.
There are moments when self-doubt creeps in – when I wonder if my voice is making a difference, if I am doing enough, or if the barriers I face will ever lessen. In these moments, I pause. I sit with my mom for a deep conversation, sharing my thoughts and allowing myself to be vulnerable. Her words of encouragement remind me: I am enough. My work matters.
I also remind myself that my journey is not just about breaking barriers for myself – it is about paving the way for others. Representation matters, and my writing, comics, and advocacy are part of a larger movement toward disability inclusion.
Prioritizing self-care
As the day winds down, I make space for self-care. This looks different every day – sometimes, it’s listening to my favorite music, reading a comforting book, or simply sitting in silence with my thoughts, without judgment.
Self-care is not just about pampering oneself; it is about honoring my body and mind, recognizing my limits, and allowing myself to rest. The world often expects disabled individuals to be endlessly resilient, but true strength also lies in knowing when to step back and recharge.
Ending the day with affirmation
Before bed, I take a few moments to reflect on the day. I celebrate the small victories—showing up, creating, advocating, and simply being present.
I whisper a silent prayer, affirming: I am strong, I am worthy, and I will keep thriving. With that thought, I close my eyes, ready to embrace another day with courage, purpose, and unwavering self-belief.
